Key Highlights of the Driver's Education Syllabus:

  • Course Focus: The Driver's Education program is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills to become responsible, safe drivers. Topics covered will include motor vehicle safety, Illinois motor vehicle laws, defensive driving techniques, and the responsibilities of vehicle ownership.
  • Attendance Requirements: In accordance with Illinois state law, students are required to attend a minimum of 30 in-person classroom hours to successfully complete the course. Students must also achieve a passing grade (60% or higher) to qualify for the Illinois Driving Instruction Permit Exam.
  • Electronic Devices Policy: To maintain a productive learning environment, students are required to store all personal electronic devices (phones, headphones, smartwatches) during class. There will be no use of these devices unless otherwise specified.
  • Grading and Assessments: Students will be assessed participation via NearPod, through quizzes, tests, and extra credit assignments posted on Google Classroom. Quizzes will be given before each chapter, and tests will occur after longer sections. If a student’s score is below 50%, they will be allowed to retake the assessment.
  • Make-Up Work (PAWS Program): If a student misses class or needs to recover assessment points, they can attend the PAWS program to make up missed work or retake assessments. Schedule: every Tuesday & Thursday in room 122 from 7:20AM-7:50AM.
  • Final Exam and Permit Eligibility: Students must pass the comprehensive final exam to be eligible for the Instructional Permit. The final exam will cover the Illinois Rules of the Road, and students must be at least 15 years old to take the exam.

Additional clarity regarding the Driver’s Education course and the process surrounding the Instructional Permit Exam.

While our curriculum and classroom assessments ensure that students master the theoretical knowledge required for safe driving, it is also essential that each student demonstrates the necessary maturity to become a responsible driver. Please note the following points:

  • Course Completion vs. Permit Exam: Students who successfully complete the course will pass the classroom requirements. However, passing the course does not automatically guarantee that I will administer the Instructional Permit Exam.
  • Maturity and Readiness: In my professional judgment, if a student does not demonstrate the requisite maturity during the course, I reserve the right not to provide the permit exam. In such cases, the student may still pass the class but will need to seek the permit exam directly through the DMV.
