Freshmen Course Selection

*Note:  The courses you select are year long.                                       

All freshmen must take the following core courses at the regular or honors level:

Algebra                                    Biology

English I                                   World Studies

Physical Education/Health

 

Below you will find possible course selections of which you may choose two:

 

Information Technology: This Freshman Technology course is designed to prepare students for the practical use of technology and stimulate their interest in the use of current computer technology.  The course includes integrated career exposure/exploration components, which provide career awareness.  The course provides an introduction to basic concepts of word-processing, spreadsheet, database, presentation, and Internet related applications. 

 

Journalism: An introduction to all aspects of the journalist’s craft: reporting, writing, photography and broadcasting.  The history of journalism and the critical issues facing today’s profession will be explored.  Students may earn the opportunity to publish in the school newspaper.

 

Written/Oral Communication In this skills based course, students gain the practice and experience necessary in tackling college-level reading, writing and speaking. Study includes literature, the majority of which is non-fiction, and writing for a variety of purposes. Students must be prepared to set individual goals and work collaboratively, sharing their insights with other writers through service in the Writing Center.

 

Art: Open to all levels. This course introduces the students to drawing, painting, sculpture, and other media. It includes analytical and technical skills focusing on art elements and principles of art.   Students also develop the ability to understand art history, and appreciate art aesthetics, art criticism and learn about the changing career field of art. Students are required to purchase basic art supplies.

 

Beginning Band: Students will learn to play various instruments of their choice. Prior music experience is welcomed, but not required. Beginning band may be substituted for general music as a graduation requirement.

 

General Music: This course is a study of basic music components, music history, music reading and listening. The course objective is to enhance the student’s overall understanding and appreciation for the performing arts.

 

World Language:  World language is designed to introduce students to basic functional proficiency in the chosen language with an emphasis on vocabulary development, and basic conversational topics. These courses enhance four skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing.   Students are required to take two years of the same language. Languages include:

 

Chinese 1                     French 1                      

Spanish 1

 

 

Parents, please be aware that your child may not be eligible to select the above courses, but, this will be determined upon reviewing EXPLORE scores.
